Our Mission and History
Once you learn to read, you will be forever free! Frederick Douglas
Our Mission: To provide effective, affordable materials and training to unlock the mysteries of reading to all those struggling to attain it!
Our Founder: Dr. Cecelia Pollack, a true visionary of the 1960's decided that there had to be a better way then classifying or casting aside inner city youth when they failed to learn to read. The numbers of referrals to her clinic at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn were staggering. With a desire to open the doors to literacy to these students and others that were being classified as dyslexic or emotionally disturbed she went to Russia and studied with the father of neuropsychology, Luria. As a result of this experience, she created a program called the Intersensory Reading Method. This program incorporated the principles of Orton-Gillingham. Armed with troops of trained parents and other volunteers, she helped thousands of troubled adolescents turn their lives around by helping them achieve basic literacy skills. In 1969 Dr. Pollack began to give future teachers the means, methods and materials to free students from the invisible chains of illiteracy. The program went on through the 80's and then went out of print. Our Company: In 1995, the need for effective reading methodologies and materials to teach the hardest to reach students became overwhelming. This need and the urging of the Syracuse City School's Reading Specialists and the Central New York Learning Disabilities Association gave a rebirth to the Intersensory Reading Program. Process Phonics as it is now called has a presence in 31 states as well as Canada, Hong Kong and Lebanon.
